3 Examples of God’s Gentleness to Help Break Our God Hate

Some people associate God with Might and limitless Power. One Pastor said, ‘we don’t need a God of Love, we need a God to be feared!’ #SayWhat?

But God’s Gentleness is easy to miss if you only experience angry voices hating with a bible in the hand. You catch this in some politics, at some funerals, and even in some churches. The world can easily question God’s Heart, and rightly so.

But glimpse these 3 examples of God’s Gentleness and repair the breach… Moses_Burning_Bush

1. The Burning Bush: The Old Testament figure Moses miraculously encountered a bush that burned yet wasn’t consumed by the fire, out of which God spoke. (Exodus 3). Did anyone notice God chose a bush, not a tree or mountain? A tree would’ve been majestic, a mountain more impressive, but God bends down to our level, getting face-to face. Remember Jesus kneeling to wash dirty feet? Peter was perplexed and almost outraged. But Jesus only does “what I see the Father doing..” (John 5:19). Does God wash feet?  Watch a mother lovingly care for her child… If you’re not sure, check this post: God Does Dishes & The Laundry-Glimpsing a Servant King.

2. The Dagon Incident: In one bible story, the Ark of the Covenant (the thing Indiana Jones was after *wink*, symbolic of God’s Presence…) was stolen. The Phillistines placed it next to their god, Dagon (probably a stone statue). The next morning Dagon is on his face before the Ark. The people pick him up and sort him out, but the next morning again he’s on the floor, this time without hands or a head (1 Samuel 5).
I’ve read one interpretation: God was toying with the people. But the more you know God, the less this makes sense. I believe God was gently warning the people with that first incident. They didn’t get it, or disregarded it, so more drastic action was undertaken. raiders of the lost ark-ark of the covenant

God could’ve wiped out the entire population, or atleast those who dared carry the Ark–He did it before with His Own, i.e. Priest Uzzah who was struck down dead after touching the Ark. But instead, God allowed Himself to be ‘captured’ (symbolically), probably in a hopes of setting His captors free from the bondage their gods had them in.

3. The Still Small Voice: Every human voice on the planet, from the little baby crying, to the old man snoring, is a vocal chord of God’s. But Power is rarely associated with small. Thunder, lions and the seas roars–even the Sun’s sound was found, but when Elijah (a prophet) went to meet God, a revelation came…god-still-small-voice-kol-dmamah-dakah-quote-not in fire wind or earthquake

Then [God] said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-13)

We expect earth-quaking, and God surprises with softness. The Hebrew word used for “still” is a feminine noun (damam) which refers to calm, silent, even astounded. “Small” is an adjective (dak) meaning thin, fine, coming from a root word that means to crush, pulverize, cast or tread down. Anyone else see Jesus in these words? Totally crushed in spirit, full of sorrows, and so despised he wasn’t even seen as a man anymore (Psalm 22:6).

So let’s put it all together.

Images from the old and new testament show God to be the original Gentle Giant (and doesnt any good parent bend down to talk to their kids, even, get on your knees to deliver an important instruction or offer a loving cuddle?). If you’re not convinced, check the life of Jesus–it makes no sense otherwise.

We may hear angry voices shouting “abomination!”, or witness policies that crush the weak promoted by those claiming to have “biblical values,” but the truth is,
the more you know God, the more you know better.
