This is Day 6 of the “Wild Kids, Wild God – 31 Days looking at God’s Heart“ Series.
My son was working really hard…the tip of his tongue even poked out of his mouth. With all his might he was trying to make this drawing extra beautiful. The finished product was astonishing, truly the most beautiful drawing he made to date.
I was eager to keep it but he was intent on giving it away….to another child! Oh No! I knew no one could ever love this piece of paper like me (..except maybe dad or grandma…) and I wanted to frame it. But in the hands of another it would surely end up in the trash.
My heart hurt as my son folded it up in preparation to give away.
At the party he handed it over shyly. I watched the child take, say thanks, and then move on to other things. My son didn’t seem to mind, he was playing too. But I was sad (honestly, it pains me even now to think of it..)
It hurts to put your heart into something and have it set aside or rejected all together…
And then I thought about Jesus…the one so gentle he wouldn’t hurt a fly, much less stone a woman (John 8)… Jesus, the image of the Invisible God and the brightness of His glory.. (Hebrews 1). God gave us His best– the kindest, most gentle, humble, and loving human being on the planet, and:
He [was] despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem him. (Isaiah 53)
My heart hurt as my son handed over his drawing to another. I wonder how God felt when Jesus was handed over to us? (Luke 22:53).
In this world we may suffer rejection, even from those closest to us–people we trust, family members, church groups, etc. We may be rejected for who we are, how we look, dress, think, speak, what we do. Even our very identities can be rejected. But when the world rejects us, God Himself accepts us. You are Beloved, you are God’s Masterpiece.
…He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons (and daughters) by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. (Ephesians 1:3-6)
